SUMMARY:Opening Reception for Candice D'Meza and Sarah Fox
DESCRIPTION:Created and performed by Candice D’Meza\, this work continues D’Meza’s exploration of Black Feminist Temporalities\, notions of justice\, liberation\, revenge\, and matriarchal cosmologies — initiated in her direction of the regional premiere of Aleshea Harris’s stage play Is God Is(2022) and her own commissioned productions A Maroon’s Guide to Time and Space (2023) and Miss LaRaj’s House of Dystopian Futures (2025). Using film\, sound\, and installation\, the work creates visceral experiences of freedom from within the Black Single Mother Imagination\, rooted within a galaxy where justice is divinely orchestrated by Primordial Mothers. \n\n\n  \n\n\nIn this body of work\, Sarah Fox has woven sculpture\, puppetry\, performance and video into a two-act fable of her own making\, Untangling the Snare. Archetypal hybrid creatures take form as marionettes and masks\, culminating in a video work and live performance. Through these multi-media vessels\, a folk tale of female solidarity and escape is born. \n\n
