September in Midtown: Celebrating Culture, Wellness, and Community

September in Midtown was filled with art, movement, and meaningful connections. From honoring Hispanic Heritage Month to unveiling groundbreaking public art, the neighborhood came alive with moments that inspired and united us. Here’s a look back:

Teach You Tuesday: Hispanic Heritage Month Tuesday, September 2 | Bagby Park

Neighbors kicked off the month with creativity at Teach You Tuesday. This class, led by Irene Valentine, honored Hispanic Heritage Month with a hands-on project where participants designed mosaic-tiled coasters inspired by traditional Spanish flower motifs. The guided instruction made for an interactive evening of exploring new crafts, connecting with fellow creatives, and celebrating culture and community.

International Women’s Fest Saturday, September 6 | Midtown Park

Midtown Park transformed into a global marketplace of talent and culture during International Women’s Fest. From handcrafted jewelry and textiles to international cuisines, the event spotlighted women artists, chefs, and entrepreneurs from around the world.

Zumba in the Park Tuesday, September 9 | Midtown Park

Midtown’s favorite weekly workout returned with high-energy dance and fitness. Instructors led a lively session that had everyone moving to the beat while building community through fun and fitness.

Sound Bath Meditatio Wednesday, September 10 | Elizabeth Baldwin Park

An immersive sound-guided meditation invited neighbors to unplug and unwind. Resonant tones and gentle chimes helped restore balance, calm the mind, and bring everyone back to the present moment.

HIIT with Roz Jones Saturday, September 13 | Bagby Park

Roz Jones brought her signature energy and expertise to Bagby Park with a powerful High-Intensity Interval Training class. Neighbors pushed their limits in a heart-pumping, 45-minute workout designed to build strength, flexibility, and endurance.

Yoga in the Park Saturday, September 13 | Bagby Park

Right after HIIT, participants moved through a yoga flow led by Roz Jones, M.Ed., Fitness Educator & Master Instructor. The session blended music, movement, and mindfulness to strengthen both body and mind in a serene outdoor setting.

Economic Development Committee Meeting Wednesday, September 17 | Sneaks Coffee & Lounge

Midtown’s Economic Development Committee met at Sneaks Coffee & Lounge to review the upcoming budget. In preparation for the new Camera Grant Program, the meeting also included a presentation from SentriForce on innovative video surveillance solutions for the District.

HueMan:Shelter Ribbon Cutting Thursday, September 18 | Midtown Houston

A historic moment for Midtown—six HueMan:Shelter installations were officially unveiled. Supported by a $1M Bloomberg Philanthropies Public Art Challenge grant, the project brought together artists and individuals with lived experiences of homelessness to create powerful works of art. Community members, partners, and city leaders celebrated resilience, dignity, and compassion on display throughout the neighborhood.

Movie Night: Coco Friday, September 19 | Bagby Park

More than 300 families and friends gathered on the lawn for a magical screening of Coco. The evening featured pre-show music and games, complimentary popcorn and cotton candy for the first 100 attendees.

Family Capoeira Saturday, September 20 | Midtown Park

The Brazilian Cultural Institute hosted a dynamic Family Capoeira class, blending martial arts, dance, and music. Participants of all ages built coordination, rhythm, and community in this unique cultural experience.

Urban Paths Night Walk Saturday, September 20 | Midtown Houston

Participants laced up their sneakers for the first Urban Paths Night Walk, a three-mile guided exploration of HueMan:Shelter installations throughout the district. The evening included sidewalk chats with artists, refreshments from local cafés, and a shared focus on wellness, community, and new perspectives on homelessness
