Enhancing Midtown with Public Art

If you have strolled or driven along Elgin Street recently, you might have noticed something new and vibrant adorning the planter urns in front of Glover Park (3104 Austin St, Houston, TX 77004) and along the street. What began as a simple idea from the Midtown Redevelopment Authority (MRA) has blossomed into a collaborative project celebrating local art and enhancing our neighborhood’s charm.

It was your votes that brought these designs to life. In May of 2023, Midtown residents voted for their favorite designs for these planter urns. Now, in partnership with UP Art Studio, talented local artists such as Serty31 have brought these designs to life. Each urn tells a unique story, adding color and creativity to our daily commutes and leisurely walks.

Celebrating Local Talent

At the heart of this initiative is the MRA’s commitment to showcasing local talent. By transforming existing infrastructure, like planter urns, into canvases for art, Midtown provides local artists with opportunities to display their work in public settings, which they might not otherwise have. This approach not only beautifies our neighborhood but also supports the creative community in a meaningful way.

A Sustainable Approach

This project also exemplifies Midtown’s dedication to enhancing existing assets in a cost-effective manner. By focusing on artistic upgrades to existing infrastructure instead of investing in new, costly projects, we demonstrate a sustainable vision that balances community beautification with practical resource management. This approach allows us to enrich the environment without diverting funds from other essential needs.

Looking Ahead

As we celebrate these artistic additions to Midtown, MRA remains committed to community engagement and enhancement. Future projects, such as mural paintings on the sides of buildings and art installations in public parks, will build on this foundation, ensuring that public spaces across our neighborhood reflect our residents’ vibrant spirit and creativity.

Next time you are in the area, take a moment to admire the newly adorned planter urns on Elgin Street. Each design reflects Midtown’s community spirit. Whether you are a longtime resident or a visitor exploring our neighborhood, these artistic touches invite you to experience Midtown’s unique blend of art, culture, and community.
