Artist Urias Merino Unveils Interactive Installation featuring Selena, Judge Lina Hidalgo,Gonzo247 and more at Bagby Park
In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Midtown Houston is proud to unveil a new artwork titled “You Can’t Say Houston, Without Us (Shaping The Future Together)” designed by local artist Urias Merino. This year’s theme, “Pioneers of Change: Shaping The Future Together,” captures the spirit of innovation, resilience, and unity among Hispanic populations. The artwork is installed on the famous Midtown letters at Bagby Park, located at 415 Gray St, Houston, TX 77002.
“I thought it would be a powerful photo moment for visitors as well as a reminder that it is up to us to continue shaping the future that we want for ourselves and future generations,” said Merino.
As Merino conducted his research for the project, he was deeply inspired by the many individuals leaving their mark on the city. From politicians like Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo, who made history as the first woman and the first Latina to be elected into Harris County, to athletes like José Altuve, Merino reflects on how countless Hispanics are currently shaping what it means to be a proud, determined Houstonian.
As a Houston native and first-generation Mexican-American, Urias Merino’s design is a reflection of Houston’s diverse Hispanic community. Merino’s work serves as a tribute to the many trailblazers who have left their mark on the city, from art and music to politics and space exploration.
“It’s a fact that our people have had a lasting impact on this city, and we will continue to do so,” said Merino.
The letters of the Midtown sign prominently highlight influential figures like Gonzo247, music icon Selena Quintanilla , Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo, the first Hispanic woman in space— astronaut Ellen Ochoa, restaurateur Mama Ninfa Laurenzo, and the Astros José Altuve. It celebrates these local legends and everyday pioneers, reminding viewers of the community’s ongoing contributions to Houston’s culture and history.
In a unique twist, the “T” in the Midtown sign wrap is intentionally left blank—featuring a silhouette where visitors can step in, pose, and imagine themselves as future pioneers of change. This interactive element encourages viewers to reflect on their role in shaping the future for the next generation. ” Midtown Houston invites the community to explore this interactive piece and celebrate the achievements of Houston’s Hispanic pioneers. An Artist Talk will be held on September 20th at 6 pm at Bagby Park. Click here for more details.
