Enhancing Infrastructure for Cyclists: Gray Street Bikeway Enhancements Underway

Midtown Houston continues to prioritize safe, accessible, and community-focused transportation options. As part of the Street Safety & Public Realm Enhancements project, the Midtown Management District (MMD) Urban Planning Committee has approved a series of upgrades along the Gray Street Bikeway. These improvements aim to enhance cyclist infrastructure, strengthen connectivity, and improve access to local businesses and public spaces.

Key Enhancements Coming to Gray Street

The project includes two major infrastructure improvements:

  • Pavement Graphics Installation – A new pavement graphic will be installed at the Gray/Austin intersection to enhance bikeway visibility and improve wayfinding for cyclists and pedestrians. The new visual will be bold, with vivid colors, incorporating the Midtown logo to ensure cyclists have added protection and a clear line of sight when commuting.
  • New Bike Racks for Midtown Cyclists – A total of 36 new bike racks will be installed at nine locations along the Gray, Austin, and LaBranch bikeways, providing more secure parking options for cyclists traveling through Midtown.

Investment in Safe & Accessible Streets

Midtown continues to be ranked a top community for cyclists, and these upcoming improvements are a result of efforts to improve cyclist infrastructure to enhance access to local businesses and public spaces while strengthening Midtown’s urban character. The overall project investment is $79,732, funded by the Midtown Management District. These upgrades reflect Midtown’s commitment to sustainable mobility and pedestrian-friendly urban design.

Project Timeline & Community Impact

Pre-construction activities are set to begin in March 2025, with the goal of enhancing cyclist access, strengthening Midtown’s urban character, and supporting local businesses. These enhancements align with Midtown’s vision of a more walkable, bike-friendly district that prioritizes safety and accessibility for all.

As this project progresses, Midtown residents, businesses, and visitors will soon experience a more connected and inviting streetscape. Stay tuned for updates on these improvements and future infrastructure projects designed to make Midtown a more vibrant and accessible community.
