Get rolling in the Midtown Houston Bike Ride

Got a bike and a yearning to explore? Then join Midtown Houston and BikeHouston this Saturday, April 15th from 10 am to noon as we gather to ride through the neighborhood, downtown, and Montrose for fresh air and cycling camaraderie.

Don’t have a bike? That’s okay, too, because there’ll be some available from the Houston BCycle Station near the starting point at Bagby Park, 415 Gray St. A membership costs only $9 a month, but short-term, walk-up rentals are available, and there are several stations in Midtown Houston.

To join the exploratory ride, please arrive 15 minutes early to sign in and bring a helmet for safety (yes, it’s required, please). After the ride, enjoy refreshments from Rico’s Morning + Noon + Night.

Biking is not only a healthy aerobic exercise, it’s also a cost-effective way to get around town––a means of transportation that actually lets you stop and smell the roses along the way.

It’s worth noting that, on March 22nd, Houston’s City Council approved and adopted a long-term master plan for a network of bike paths across the city. The Houston Bike Plan aims to provide a safer, more comfortable environment for cyclists, more affordable access to opportunities for families who choose not to own cars, and improve community health and wellness.

The existing bikeway network consists of 495 miles, but the long-term goal is to expand that to 1,789 miles, as well as to raise Houston’s current bronze-level rating to a gold-level rating as a Bicycle-Friendly City by the year 2027 (as designated by the League of American Bicyclists).

Midtown Houston has already earned a Bike Score of 72 by the private company WalkScore® that provides apartment search tools and walkability/cycling ratings for every address in the country. On a scale of 1 to 100, Bike Score measures whether a location is good for biking based on bike lanes, hills, destinations and road connectivity, and bike commuting mode share.

We understand the value of getting where you want to go and enjoying the journey, so we encourage every resident to take advantage of opportunities to walk and bike more. Come on out this Saturday and pedal with us!
