Street Overlay and Sidewalk Improvements in Midtown

As Midtown Houston looks ahead to a more walkable and connected future, we are excited to share updates on the street overlay and sidewalk improvement projects now underway. These infrastructure enhancements are designed to create safer, more accessible streets which better serve our community of residents, visitors, and businesses.

Identifying the Challenges

Prior to these improvements, many streets in Midtown Houston faced significant challenges with aging infrastructure, deteriorating road surfaces, and limited pedestrian accessibility. The Midtown Sidewalk Conditions Assessment revealed that a large number of sidewalks were too narrow, uneven, or in poor condition, making it difficult for pedestrians to navigate safely. Additionally, the City of Houston’s Pavement Condition Index (PCI) ratings showed that several local streets required resurfacing to improve driving conditions. Public feedback emphasized the need for safer crossings, smoother sidewalks, and better roadways, reinforcing the urgency for these improvements.

Designing with the Community in Mind

The planning and design phases for these projects have been shaped by direct input from the Midtown community. Residents and stakeholders shared their priorities, with safe, accessible sidewalks and smooth, reliable roadways topping the list. In response, sidewalks on local streets will be reconstructed to a standard 5-foot width, while those along major thoroughfares will expand to 6 feet, improving walkability and accessibility.

Construction phases are being prioritized based on community feedback and infrastructure assessments, ensuring that the most critical needs are addressed first.

Current Focus Areas: Isabella and Truxillo Streets

The Midtown Redevelopment Authority recently approved funding for the design of roadway rehabilitation and sidewalk improvements along Isabella Street and Truxillo Street. The planned improvements include:

  • Isabella Street: Enhancements will extend from Main Street to Fannin Street and from San Jacinto Street to Almeda Street.
  • Truxillo Street: Enhancements will stretch from Main Street to just west of IH-69.

These upgrades will involve comprehensive milling and asphalt overlay to improve road conditions, as well as the rehabilitation of sidewalks, refreshed crosswalks, and updated pavement markings to boost safety and accessibility.

Investing in Midtown’s Future

The improvements to Isabella and Truxillo Streets are funded by a $1,142,857 HUD Community Project Grant awarded to Midtown Redevelopment Authority through the efforts of the late Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee. This investment reflects a shared commitment to strengthening Midtown’s infrastructure and supporting sustainable community growth.

We look forward to sharing more updates during construction which is estimated to begin in Spring 2026. By prioritizing safety, accessibility, and sustainability, these improvements represent a lasting investment in Midtown Houston’s vibrant future.
