The sun is out and spring is heating up in Midtown Houston. It’s time to gather outdoors with friends and family as we kick off the summer with outdoor fitness classes, art in the park, Cinco de Mayo celebrations, movie night featuring Forrest Gump, and much more. Join your neighbors as we make memories together, try new food trucks, dance to the sounds of samba, and challenge ourselves to learn a new skill!

Heroes Again Boot Camp

Military veterans turned fitness instructors come together to welcome all community members in a safe space to improve fitness and mental health. Led by Fitmix Yoga & Latin Fitness Studio, everyone is welcome to share in the safe, fun, and energized space to have sincere conversations about mental health struggles, coping mechanisms, real-life stories, and resources. The goal is to get physically and mentally stronger together while we build an amazing community!

Zumba

Kick-start your week outdoors with a total fitness workout that combines cardio, muscle conditioning, balance, flexibility, and boosted energy. This free weekly Zumba class accepts walk-ups and encourages participants to bring water and wear tennis shoes (18+ preferred).

Celebrate Cinco De Mayo at Brunch and Books in Bagby Park, with drinks and taco samplings from La Calle Tacos. This month’s featured book is Chicano Eats: Recipes from My Mexican-American Kitchen by Esteban Castillo – register for a chance to win a free copy of the book!

May the 4th Be With You this month as you enjoy the galactic sight of chalk artists creating right before your eyes, set to the sounds of DJ Rosez. Enjoy food and drinks from local food trucks, shop local vendors, and watch as the park is turned into a Galaxy Far Far Away, with local artists spread out across the park and one-of-a-kind chalk art highlighting this month’s star-studded theme featured on the pavement around Bagby Park. This is a can’t miss event to kick-start your summer!

Get inspired at the monthly ‘Teach You Tuesday’ class! Learn a new craft, skill, or technique in this unique hands-on experience. Enjoy the art of Decoupage Planters with Succulents this month, hosted by Pop Shop America. Space is limited, participants must RSVP (please cancel your ticket if you can not attend to make space for others). 

Please note in the event of rain: If there is a chance for light rain, the class will be moved indoors to the office building behind the park (410 Pierce, First Floor). Entry is off Pierce, with street parking available. Staff will be on-site to help direct people. Class is scheduled to take place unless severe weather or a cancellation is sent.

Sound Bath Meditation

Join us for a sound bath meditation, which uses sound to cultivate and support deep relaxation. The listener is “bathed” in waves of sound, which can relieve stress and anxiety by calming the mind and body as they lay down and relax. Led by Midtown partners Gongsia Sacred SoundNo experience is necessary. Attendees are encouraged to bring a blanket, mat, or anything they need to be comfortable while lying down.

Get out and get moving this spring! Join this High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) class in Bagby Park with Roz Jones, Fit Lifestyle Innovator. Roz is a dynamic and influential force of energy and enthusiasm. A seasoned fitness professional, his classes help participants build strength, flexibility, and endurance. Be prepared to burn calories and build character by combining cardiovascular training, strength training, functional flexibility, and music for a solid 45-minute practice (weather permitting). Attendees are strongly encouraged to bring a mat and water; resistance bands are optional. This class is limited to participants 18 years or older.

Movement, music, and mindfulness are the focus of this Baptiste-inspired, powerful yoga flow that engages all your muscles for increased mobility and strength. A Fit Lifestyle Innovator, Roz’s classes help participants build strength, flexibility, and endurance. Attendees are strongly encouraged to bring a mat and water; yoga straps and blocks are optional. This class is limited to participants 18 years or older.

Samba Class

Learn one of Brazil’s most popular partner dances from the best of the best at Samba Class in Midtown Park. The class is free and open to all skill levels, taught by instructor Isadora Figueroa. Samba is a partner dance from Rio de Janeiro that evolved as a ballroom dance to the Brazilian samba musical rhythms. 

Throwback Thursday Workout

In the words of Olivia Newton-John, “Let’s Get Physical!” Throwback Thursday Workout is a fun, retro music-inspired class featuring hits from the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s. Neon attire and leg warmers are highly recommended! Attendees who bring the most friends to class or dress in their best retro workout gear will have the chance to win prizes. Isadora Figueroa and Dee Elliot host this class, combining all elements of fitness – cardio, balance, flexibility, boosted energy, and a serious dose of awesome each time you leave class.

Movie Night: Forrest Gump

Family Capoeira

Family Capoeira class is a unique Afro-Brazilian martial art that develops discipline, coordination, strength, and rhythm. The Brazilian Cultural Institute provides instruction, and the class is open to families of all sizes and skill levels. Attendees are strongly encouraged to bring water and stay hydrated. A parent or guardian must accompany participants under 18.
