Hispanic Heritage Month Artist Talk

September 20 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Midtown Houston is proud to unveil a special sign wrap titled “You Can’t Say Houston, Without Us (Shaping The Future Together)” designed by local artist Urias Merino.

Join us for an intimate discussion with the artist!

This year’s theme, “Pioneers of Change: Shaping The Future Together,” captures the Hispanic experience’s spirit of innovation, resilience, and unity.

As Merino conducted his research for the project, he was deeply inspired by the many individuals leaving their mark on the city. From politicians like Lina Hidalgo, who has fought for voting rights, to athletes like José Altuve, who helps Houstonians unwind after a long week, Merino reflects on how countless Hispanics are currently shaping what it means to live in Houston.

The installation prominently highlights influential figures such as muralist Gonzo247, music icon Selena Quintanilla, restaurateur Mama Ninfa Laurenzo, and astronaut Ellen Ochoa—the first Hispanic woman in space. It celebrates these local legends and everyday pioneers, reminding viewers of the community’s ongoing contributions to Houston’s culture and history.
