March 13, 2023, Houston, TX – Midtown Houston is hosting its annual Art in the Park event- a celebration of art, food and music curated to elevate the diverse art community in the city. Taking place on Saturday, April 21 and April 22, 2023, at Baldwin Park (1701 Elgin St, Houston, TX 77004), this year’s theme is Let Art Inspire HOU!, an homage to the brilliant selection of talent in the space city. Residents and visitors alike can expect an eclectic variety of vendors, artisans and performers, while celebrating the breadth and depth of talent in Houston, which was recently touted as America’s new art city.
The two-day, family-friendly event will return to Baldwin Park, known for its glorious oak trees, and guests will have the chance to explore new park upgrades, such as enhancements to the playground. ArtJams are back, offering guests free classes complete with supplies for the creative at heart. Novices or crafty pros can now sign up for an Astro’s- inspired wreath-making session, a graffiti name painting class, an interactive sip and paint session and prepare for the month ahead at a DIY Mother’s Day piñata-making class.
Some of Houston’s best Chalk Artists will return to Art in the Park, pouring out their passion from heart to hand and onto the sidewalk. The fun doesn’t stop with just people – guests can bring a furry friend along and pick up a free Pup Cake from Jackson’s Place-Midtown.
Art in the Park offers many photo opportunities, including an oversized walk-in interactive photo box and three oversized arches. The arches will feature colorful butterflies and extra large paper flowers, while the main stage will reflect the stunning Houston skyline, fusing technology and art. Houston’s best eats will be served by local food trucks.
“Houstonians are resilient, vibrant and the city’s international fabric is what makes it so special,” said Cynthia Alvarado, Director of Operations and Strategic Planning for the Midtown Management District. “Most people don’t know that Midtown is one of seven Cultural Arts Districts in Houston. I’m glad that our city is recognized as an arts destination, and I look forward to celebrating the homegrown talent right here in our city, in one of our most breathtaking green spaces.”
This year’s event will feature 30 artists and for the first time, include a “tween” artist, 11-year-old Sara Cunningham. A Houston native, Cunningham’s drawings focus on creatively capturing people and animals in ways that speak to her spirit. She’s the youngest artist to ever participate in Art in the Park.
“I want people to look at my art and imagine it coming to life,” said Cunningham.
