What’s Next for Midtown: Streetscape Enhancements Underway

Midtown Houston is known for its walkability, vibrant streetscapes, and inviting public spaces. To ensure these areas remain beautiful and accessible, the Midtown Streetscape Refresh is now moving forward with planned improvements to Elgin Street, McGowen Street, and Gray Street. This effort, led by the Midtown Management District (MMD), will revitalize landscaping, refresh pedestrian pathways, and update key streetscape elements to maintain the district’s appeal. This initiative helps sustain the district’s attractive, pedestrian-friendly environment and ensures that Midtown remains a visually appealing destination for residents and visitors alike.

April 2025: Pre-Construction Activities Begin

Landscape Art is leading the work, after being awarded a $1,003,155.15 construction contract in February 2025 and contractor mobilization plans are now in motion. This month, crews will begin pre-construction activities, preparing the streets for much-needed upgrades.

What’s Coming Soon?

Over the next few months, residents and visitors will see improvements that include:

  • Landscaping updates – Removal and replacement of dead or aging trees, shrubs, and groundcover
  • Hardscape repairs – Restoration of sidewalk pavers, tree grates, and street name pavers
  • Refreshed street furnishings – Benches and trash receptacles will be repaired or replaced as needed

These enhancements will preserve Midtown’s pedestrian-friendly environment while ensuring long-term sustainability.

Spring & Summer 2025: Streetscape Improvements in Progress

Following pre-construction, visible updates will take shape across the district. Construction observation will continue through the summer, with substantial completion anticipated by early Fall of 2025.

By investing in the Midtown Streetscape Refresh, MMD is reinforcing its commitment to maintaining a well-kept, accessible, and visually appealing district for residents, businesses, and visitors alike. Studies show that well-maintained neighborhoods foster a greater sense of security and community pride, reducing the likelihood of crime and unsafe conditions.
