This year, Midtown Houston is doing something it has never done before.
For the first time, Midtown is launching an official Artist in Residence Program, a new investment in local creativity that gives one Houston artist the time, space, and support to build new work while connecting with the community along the way.
That first artist is DUAL STREETS.

A fixture in Houston’s creative landscape since 2005, DUAL is known for work that lives in the tension between street art and fine art, structure and flow, the built environment and the natural world. His bold visual language blends hard-edge abstraction, layered botanical forms, vibrant color, and movement, creating work that invites people to slow down, look closer, and discover something new over time.

A Residency Rooted in Midtown
The idea behind Midtown’s residency is simple: when artists are given real resources and room to create, the work does not just stay in a studio. It becomes part of our neighborhood, sparking conversation, building curiosity, and helping tell the story of our community in a way that feels personal, public, and alive.
That vision is at the heart of Midtown’s inaugural residency cycle, which runs from April through July 2026. Over four months, the selected artist receives a dedicated workspace, a $20,000 stipend, and strong promotional support from Midtown’s team and cultural partners. But what makes this opportunity especially meaningful is that it is designed to be public-facing from the start. Rather than creating behind closed doors, the resident artist will engage directly with Midtown residents, visitors, and stakeholders through a series of community activities that invite people into the creative process.
This residency reflects where we are headed as a district. As we continue expanding
Midtown’s cultural arts programming, this program marks a major step forward, deepening our long-term commitment to artists while strengthening the connection between art and everyday life in our community.

Meet the Artist: DUAL
Born and raised in Houston, DUAL has developed a signature visual language shaped by years of studio practice, public artmaking, and deep observation of the city around him. He holds a BFA in Painting from the University of Houston, and his work spans murals, paintings, sculpture, and tape-based works that move across mediums and settings. His work has been exhibited in galleries and public spaces across Houston and beyond, reflecting a practice that is both grounded in the city and expansive in its reach.
DUAL’s work explores the tension between street art and fine art, anonymity and recognition, and urban structure and organic growth. Through bold color, layered composition, and embedded imagery, he creates work that shifts with perspective and invites personal interpretation.
For Midtown’s first cycle of its residency program, DUAL will bring that perspective into a new body of work titled Urban Wild: Hidden Nature of Midtown.

Urban Wild: Hidden Nature of Midtown
During the residency, DUAL will create a multidisciplinary project exploring the ecosystems that exist within Houston’s urban landscape. Inspired by Midtown’s architecture and environment, his work will embed animals and botanical forms within abstract compositions, encouraging the community to look closely and discover wildlife and plant life that often go unnoticed in the city.
His residency will include a series of paintings and an augmented reality mural designed to reveal another layer of Midtown’s environment. Through animated elements like birds, plants, and hidden wildlife, the mural will create an interactive visual experience that extends beyond the wall itself. The project will culminate in a public exhibition, mural unveiling, and a printed Urban Wild Field Guide: Midtown Edition that deepens the experience even further.
It is a concept that feels especially fitting for us. Midtown is always moving, evolving, and revealing new layers to the people who live, work, and spend time here.
Creating Work the Community Can Connect To
For DUAL, one of the most important parts of his residency is the opportunity to create work that the Midtown community can genuinely connect with.
He shared that he wants the work to feel approachable, something anyone passing by can find meaning in, no matter their background or age. He also emphasized the value of letting people witness the process in real time, creating space for conversation, curiosity, and inspiration along the way. Through live painting, workshops, and public interaction, his goal is to help the work feel like it belongs to our community.
That idea is central to Midtown’s vision for the program, too. This residency isn’t about supporting one artist. It is about creating moments of connection between art, place, and people, and making sure creativity is something the neighborhood can experience as it unfolds.
A First Step Toward Something Bigger
The launch of Midtown Houston’s first-ever Artist in Residence Program is a milestone, It signals a continued investment in local artists. It expands how public art can show up in the district. And it creates a new platform for storytelling, discovery, and community connection through creative work that is rooted in our community itself.
With DUAL leading the inaugural cycle, that first chapter begins with color, movement, hidden nature, and a fresh way of seeing our neighborhood.
The Midtown’s Artist in Residence Program is just getting started. Cycle 2 of the Artist in Residence Program will begin accepting applications on July 7. To learn more about this opportunity and other ways artists can get involved in Midtown, visit our Artist Opportunities page.
