Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in Midtown Houston: Eat, Shop and Explore Local

From September 15 through October 15, Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates the histories, cultures and contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities across the country. In Midtown Houston, it is also an opportunity to celebrate right here in our neighborhood by supporting the local businesses that bring flavor, creativity, craftsmanship and connection to the area.

Supporting local is part of what keeps Midtown connected. This Hispanic Heritage Month, explore a few of the Hispanic-owned businesses that contribute to the culture and character of the neighborhood.

Start With Something Delicious

There is no better way to begin than around the table.

La Calle Tacos & Cantina, owned by Ramon and Fernando, brings the energy and flavor of Mexico City to Midtown, serving up tacos and more at 401 Gray Street right in the heart of Bagby Park. It’s an easy stop for lunch, dinner or a bite while exploring the neighborhood.

At Gloria’s Latin Cuisine, 2616 Louisiana Street, the Fuentes family serves Salvadoran and Tex-Mex favorites in a welcoming place to gather. From pupusas and tamales to mojitos and margaritas, there’s plenty to explore on the menu.

Pizza belongs on the list, too. The Gypsy Poet, Cesar and Jennifer Hernandez bring together artisanal wood-fired pizza, poetry, open-mic sessions and patio dining at 2404 Austin Street. It’s a neighborhood destination where food and creative expression come together.

For another Midtown favorite, head to Cyclone Anaya’s, 309 Gray Street, Suite 111. Owned by Rico Valencia, the restaurant serves familiar Tex-Mex dishes in a lively setting known for its signature margaritas.

Shop Local and Discover Something New

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month can extend beyond the dining table. Midtown is home to businesses where craftsmanship, music and neighborhood character take center stage.

At Al’s Handmade Boots, 2323 Fannin Street, Master Bootmaker Alvaro Rivera brings traditional craftsmanship to the heart of Midtown. The family business creates handcrafted Western boots for customers in Houston and around the world.

Music lovers can make their way to Sig’s Lagoon, owned by Tomas Escalante, near Mid-Main at 3622 Main Street, Suite E. Browse vinyl, CDs and collectibles or find tickets to concerts happening across Houston. It’s the kind of stop where digging through the shelves is part of the experience.

Just a few doors away at 3622 Main Street, Suite B, Big Kat’s Barber Shop has brought traditional barbershop service and neighborhood character to Main Street since 2011.

Make Time for Wellness

Exploring Midtown can include a little self-care, too.

Massage Heights Midtown, owned by Theresa Castro, offers massage and skin therapy services designed around relaxation and wellness at 2625 Louisiana Street, Suite H. Consider it a chance to recharge before heading back out to experience more of the neighborhood.

Celebrate Local, All Year Long

Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to recognize culture, history and contributions, but supporting the people and businesses that shape Midtown does not have to end on October 15.

Midtown Houston is home to a diverse mix of small businesses, restaurants, cultural spaces and gathering places that help create the connected urban community residents and visitors experience every day. Celebrating them strengthens local connections and supports the economic and cultural vitality of the neighborhood—both key parts of Midtown’s commitment to a thriving community.

This Hispanic Heritage Month, make a day of it: grab a meal, browse a local shop, discover some music or make time to recharge.
