Enhancing Safety and Security in Midtown Houston

Taking Action to Enhance Safety in Midtown

Public safety is at the heart of a thriving community. In Midtown Houston, we’re listening and acting to create programs and projects that enhance security and address the concerns of business owners, residents, and visitors. The input has been invaluable in shaping our response.

We dedicate an average annual investment of $1.4 million to safety and cleanliness initiatives, and we partner with law enforcement agencies to ensure a secure and clean environment. This year, our focus is on visibility, effectiveness, and trust, as we work together to enhance public safety and create a safer, stronger Midtown. While we do not take the place of the Houston Police Department (HPD) — our first line of defense—we’re proud to partner with them and other security resources to amplify the safety efforts in our neighborhood.

HPD Bike Patrol in Midtown

Improving Patrol Coverage with HPD Bike Patrol

The Midtown HPD Bike Patrol has officially launched, providing a visible and accessible safety presence throughout the district. Easily recognizable in bright yellow uniforms, these officers can navigate areas that patrol vehicles cannot and are easily approachable. While their primary focus will be on high-traffic and high-need areas, we have requested coverage across the entire district, including residential neighborhoods.
Patrol schedules will vary based on need and available personnel.

To maximize coverage, we are working closely with HPD’s South Central and Central divisions to establish formal patrol routes and deploy officers strategically. Studies have shown that bike patrols can significantly reduce violent crime—one Philadelphia study found a 23% decrease in areas patrolled by bike officers compared to those with only foot or car patrols.

This initiative is funded by a $110,000 contribution from the Midtown Parking Benefit District and does not rely on resident assessment fees. By increasing mobility and community engagement, the Midtown HPD Bike Patrol will enhance safety where it’s needed most.

More to Come

While these initiatives mark a significant step forward, they’re just the beginning. By listening to your concerns, we’re ensuring Midtown remains a vibrant neighborhood with enhanced safety options, where businesses, residents, and visitors can thrive, explore, and connect. Stay tuned as we continue to make Midtown a stronger place for all. You make the difference in the work we do, so be sure to attend our virtual committee meetings and join us at a future board meeting. Details for our public meetings are on our website at midtownhouston.com. Details on filing a police report can be found here.
